How much does it cost? How long does an appointment last?
An appointment costs £250 and will last approximately 90 minutes.
What is the benefit of a Listen and Talk as One (LATAO) appointment?
At a LATAO appointment you will be seen by specialists in children’s audiology and Auditory Verbal Therapy at the same time. During the appointment your child’s hearing will be assessed and you will be introduced to the techniques and approaches used by Auditory Verbal Therapists.
What types of appointments are available?
LATAO offers a joint appointment with independent audiology services, Chear, and the charity Auditory Verbal UK who work together to support parents to understand what your child can hear and how they can develop their listening and spoken language. You will be seen by a Senior Audiologist and Auditory Verbal Therapist for your appointment who will look at the potential of understanding speech through listening by assessing your child’s detection and discrimination of speech, speech sounds or music through their Hearing Aids or Cochlear Implants. AVUK and Chear work from the same office so we can check out any hearing aid problems (not Cochlear Implants) if/when they occur.
How is this different from seeing my local services?
LATAO is a unique partnership as Chear and Auditory Verbal UK bring together specialisms in audiology and Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT). As Auditory Verbal Therapy relies on hearing technology being optimised for the development of listening and vocalisation skills, we think it is important to offer these two components in the same appointment. By adjusting the hearing aid around the hearing levels of your baby or young child we can save months of appointments with different services.
At a Listen and Talk and One appointment, you will learn what the Auditory Verbal approach involves and how you can support your child’s hearing and understanding. LATAO introduces families to this in a practical hands-on way, so that you can decide if you would like to explore it further. Who will I see at an appointment?
You will be seen by a Senior Audiologist and a certified Auditory Verbal Therapist for your appointment.
My baby is only a few weeks old and we found out through the New Born Hearing Screening that my child is deaf. Is it too early to come and see you?
No, these appointments are particularly orientated to babies and families in the first year of life, when accurate hearing levels may not be available yet. This is a very important time to get a flying start on listening and vocalising.
Can I have another appointment?
If, during your LATAO appointment you are interested in receiving Auditory Verbal Therapy on a regular basis, you will be able to talk to the therapists about joining the Auditory Verbal UK programme.
